What if every time you paid online for a travel reservation, they paid you back 1%? How about 15%? Leveraging online shopping portals can be an excellent means of double or even triple dipping on travel spend, since you can earn cash refunds AND your typical rewards provided through your preferred hotel, airline, credit card, and OTAs such as Orbitz or Expedia. Each cash-back shopping portal (e.g. Ebates, Fat Wallet) transfers you directly to the website of your preferred travel operator where your actual reservation takes place, allowing you to still earn loyalty points while also earning cash back. The portals are simply taking credit for the referred sale, and you are getting a share of their commissions. Each of the portals will require you to open a free account and initiate your purchase through their site. It would be beneficial to research their general terms a bit, however, to compare payout minimums, etc.
Before simply jumping in and using a shopping portal, I highly recommend that you first take a moment and check out an aggregator site like www.evreward.com to compare payout percentages. For instance, you may find a lucrative cash back offer on Holiday Inn (IHG) reservations when using a specific shopping portal. Likewise, you can often earn cash back on reservations made through Hotels.com. So on top of earning hotel points for your Holiday Inn stay or earning Hotels.com stay credits, you could also earn a fairly significant cash refund.
